The Erie Lackawanna, a 1960 product of a merger between the Erie RR and the Delaware, Lackawanna, and Western RR, would prove to be one of my favorite subjects as my interest in railroads grew. The friendly crews, interesting operations, and of course that attractive company image on their locomotives all played a part. The EL would disappear into Conrail in 1976, so my time around the EL was but a few short years. Below are several images taken in the last two years of the railroad.

This is a view from the Thornton St. bridge in Akron, Ohio of the Erie Lackawanna yard. Taken in 1976, it shows an EL RS-3 working the yard as a switcher rests at the engine house in the background.
Fast forward to the late 90's and this once busy facility is being reduced to an open field. Today this yard is home to the Metro bus transfer station ( see this photo ).
In this early Conrail view we see a westbound at Polk, Ohio on the former Erie Lackawanna main. For a few years Conrail still used this line, but sold it in the 90's. Today the Ashland Railway operates a local a couple days a week, a far cry from the 30 trains a day the EL ran here.
In the later day view we see one track remains and the buildings have lost their distinctive local lettering.
